That Western Life Podcast X COWGIRL Episode 8: Janie Johnson

August 11, 2021 0 comments CG Social Team

When it comes to Janie Johnson, you can’t help but fall in love with her authentic rodeo roots and love for the sport of rodeo! Her go-getter and can’t-take-no attitude has helped her both in the barrel racing pen and in her professional career as a sideline broadcaster for professional rodeo. Whether it was creating videos as a steer wrestling hazer at the National High School Rodeo Finals or showing up almost unannounced for an internship at the National Finals Rodeo, Janie takes you along her adventure to become a COWGIRL Magazine 30 Under 30 2021 recipient!

“Growing up in Canyon, Texas, which is just outside of Amarillo and the definition of “west Texas.” Despite growing up on a ranch, Janie wanted to be a superstar or Disney channel star like Hillary Duff in Lizzie McGuire. It wasn’t until her teen years that she fully got into horses and rodeo, even though she had been riding her whole life.

“Janie’s dad was a four-time world champion saddle bronc rider, and was an all-around likeable and joyful man. In hindsight, Janie appreciates horses and family so much more than she ever did in the time. Horses, animals and the land, looking back, shaped her and she feels lucky to have had the childhood that she had.”

The Assistant Editor and Digital Editor for “The Team Roping Journal”, Kaitlin’s passion for team roping rivals that of most sports fanatics! In this episode, Kaitlin shares her up-and-coming team ropers you need to watch, as well as a “way-too-early” National Finals Rodeo insider scoop!

“Kaitlin Gustave discovered her love of team roping at the age of sixteen and never looked back. The young roper, an editor in her own right, has competed at the college level in team roping and breakaway roping. After an internship with what was then known as “Spin to Win Rodeo” and is now known as “The Team Roping Journal”, she took a job with them and has never looked back!

“‘The world is really small, the people know me through my mom and sister, and vice versa, people know them through me in some ways,’ says Kaitlin. We were excited to flip the script on Kaitlin and interview her on a podcast instead of the other way around.”

That Western Life Podcast X COWGIRL Episode 6: Anna Baglione

July 13, 2021 0 comments CG Social Team

Located in Bishop, California, and a native of central California, Anna Baglione is a recipient of the 2021 COWGIRL Magazine 30 Under 30 Award. Growing up on an almond farm in the central valley of California called Escelon, the heart of the central valley, they had a variety of crops and farm animals throughout her childhood in this little farming community. Next door to Oakdale, Anna spent her time riding horses and taking lessons. That was where she got her first unpaid gig as a camp counselor at a horse camp and who knew it would have led her to the adventures that she has been on in her short life.

“‘We could take our horses and go camping and it was only about a two-hour drive to nice corrals where you could set up and ride out to some nice land,” says Anna, whose mom got them involved with the Backcountry Horsemen of America. “We went out to the mountains and started bringing the horses and I got introduced to packing at [sixteen years of age]… because I liked horses and I liked camping.’

“It was the perfect intersection for her to begin finding what she was passionate about!

“When Anna turned 18 years old she heard about a job opportunity on the east side of the Sierra Nevada’s but it took a lot of people to convince her to do it. Before that, she had ridden but was also a big time long-distance runner in cross-country. At the juncture of trying to decide if she pursue the path as an athlete or to focus on getting a degree and riding horses – she chose the latter and ended up at Rock Creek Pack Station in 2012!”

One with the back country, Anna takes us on an adventure of the land that she loves and up into the high country of the Sierra Nevada’s with stories of trail life, Bishop Mule Days, and even of a pesky bear!

That Western Life Podcast X COWGIRL Episode 5: Paige Stout

July 6, 2021 0 comments CG Social Team

Paige Stout was named a COWGIRL Magazine 30 Under 30 as a part of the inaugural class in 2020. It’s no surprise, as this young woman has taken bucking bulls to the PBR World Finals five of the eight years that she has been hauling! Getting her first bull at ten years, Paige walks us through raising bucking bulls, getting her nursing degree, and what she sees as the future of women in Western industries!

“‘My dad’s dad was a professional bull rider back before the PRCA even existed,’ says Paige, whose father followed in the family footsteps until he, literally, outgrew being a bull rider by being too tall. He started fighting bulls as a bull fighter and they began raising bulls as a family at a young age.

“Paige says that her interest in bucking bulls practically grew overnight and she purchased her first bull at the age of ten. With a laugh, Paige admits that she did get on a bucking bull once but it was out in the pasture feeding and not an arena setting.

“‘He was very gentle and you could go up and pet him and rub all over him,’ says Paige, who asked her dad what he would do. ‘I said, ‘Alright!’ And swung a leg over and he bucked me off! … I haven’t been on one since!'”

Bryce Albright may seem young for her position as the executive director of the Dude Rancher’s Association, but a lifetime spent on dude ranches has made her a capable leader who has successful navigated a tourism industry through the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the 2021 COWGIRL Magazine 30 Under 30 inductee’s, Bryce talks about how she continued to improve her skills and build relationships, which resulted in the opportunity to interview for her dream job at such a young age!

“Bryce is a cowgirl raised between Wyoming and Montana on a Dude Ranch to parents who are a “dude ranch romance” that lasted more than a summer, in fact, they just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary! Because of this, Dude Ranch’s are such a special place in the safety and autonomy that comes with a Dude Ranch is truly a special place in the world that we live in today.

“‘Growing up, I learned every aspect of the ranch,’ says Bryce, whose aunt and uncle managed a dude ranch and one where Bryce worked at after they sold it. In her time on the dude ranch, she held every job title that they have available on the show.

“The Dude Rancher’s Association is a trade industry that has been around for nearly 100 years and has been providing destination western ranch vacations for over a hundred years! While they all include horseback riding to some capacity, the 93 ranches over 10 western U.S. states and one Canadian province, also include their own unique outdoor activities like zip lining, cattle drives, fly fishing, and more!”
